Installing a bathroom floor is about fitting a new surface into a room that already has doors, fixtures and adjoining finishes that are not changing. The new floor is typically thicker than what was there before — it sits on a subfloor that might be levelled, heated, or both, then tile, vinyl, or another finish goes on top of that structural layer. That added thickness changes the height of the finished floor, which affects the door that opens into the room and the transition where the bathroom floor meets the hallway or another room's finished level.
The doorway is the critical point of conflict. A new floor that is higher than the old one might prevent the door from closing at all, or force undercutting the door casing and frame so the floor can run beneath it rather than stopping against it. The transition at the doorway has to be a threshold that bridges the height difference smoothly and safely. A transition that is too steep is a trip hazard — someone's foot catches on the lip. One that is too shallow lets water and moisture run out into the hallway, defeating the waterproofing intent of the bathroom enclosure. The threshold must slope or step at exactly the right angle.
Sequencing the floor installation matters significantly for workflow and final fit. The floor can be installed before the toilet and vanity go in, leaving those heavy fixtures sitting on top of the finished floor, or after those fixtures are already installed, with the floor running around and fitting tightly to them. Installing the floor before fixtures saves access and is simpler — you have an open room to work in — but the finish can be damaged by the fixture installation. Installing after means the floor fits perfectly around what is already there with no gaps, but requires more careful work around obstacles. That decision affects when the fixtures can be brought in, when the finish can be seen, and how reversible each stage is if changes are needed later.
Perimeter allowances have to be considered. At the walls, the flooring material needs a small gap for expansion and contraction — tile, vinyl, and stone all move with temperature and humidity changes. That gap is typically hidden by a baseboard, cove, or trim piece that sits on top of the finished floor. Without this allowance, the flooring pushes against the wall, buckles, or cracks.
