Underfloor heating is a layer decision that adds height to the floor build-up, which has consequences for doors, thresholds, and the finished surface. The heat and embedding material stack on top of existing levelling or subfloor work, which affects doorway thresholds and whether doors still swing freely. Two approaches exist: electric heating mats (simpler for rectangular rooms) and loose cable systems (more flexible and better for complex shapes, irregular layouts, and areas around fixtures). Each has different installation requirements, costs, and ongoing energy consumption.
Heat must be zoned carefully to walked areas only — the path from the door to vanity to toilet to shower — skipping under vanities, under the toilet footprint, and under bathtubs where nobody stands, saving both energy and installation cost. Heat under a vanity where there is no foot traffic wastes energy. Heat under a standing toilet is uncomfortable. Zoning decisions are made before the heat goes down and are difficult to change after installation. The subfloor level, any levelling work, the embedding material, and the final floor finish all stack together to change how tall the bathroom floor is relative to adjacent rooms.
Different finishes conduct heat very differently and suit underfloor heating to different degrees. Tile is excellent for underfloor heat — it conducts warmth beautifully and people enjoy the warmth underfoot. Stone similarly conducts heat well. Vinyl conducts heat poorly and needs a thicker heating layer to feel effective. Laminate is the least suited — sustained heat can affect the adhesives and cause swelling at edges. The finish choice directly affects how the heat feels underfoot and how efficient the system actually is.
