Custom Vanity Installation

Almost nothing in an older bathroom is plumb, level or square, so a vanity is cut to fit the room on site rather than pushed against the wall and hoped for.

What this involves

Vanity Installation

An opening measured at the back is not the opening measured at the front, and neither matches what it is 100mm off the floor. In a house with lath and plaster behind the drywall, the spread between the largest and smallest of those figures is routinely 10 to 20mm. A cabinet made to the largest will not go in; one made to the smallest goes in surrounded by gaps. So it is built a few millimetres undersize with scribe stiles standing proud at the ends, and the fit is cut on site against the wall that exists.

Level comes before plumb, and the floor is what loses. The carcass is levelled to itself and packed clear of the floor, and the plinth is then scribed down to whatever the floor is doing. Doing it the other way round — standing the box on the floor and correcting at the top — puts the error into the one horizontal line visible from the doorway. Where a wall leans outward the gap shows at the rear edge of the counter rather than at the cabinet, so scribe allowance is planned for the top as well.

Fixings go through a back rail thick enough to take them, into located studs or blocking, with a packer behind every fixing point. Without packers, tightening a screw pulls the carcass into the hollow of the wall and racks it, and the first thing to show is a drawer front no longer parallel with the one below.

Then the connections. Existing stops frequently sit at a height that lands in the path of a drawer box, and old chrome-plated valves untouched for twenty years often will not close, so replacing them is scope rather than a surprise. Finally the junction with tile: whether tile runs behind the unit or stops against it decides whether the cabinet can ever be changed without retiling, and the joint itself is sealed flexibly, never grouted, because the two surfaces move independently.

The process

    Survey the opening

    Width is taken at several heights and both depths, walls are checked for plumb, the floor for level, and stud and blocking positions are located and marked.

    Level, scribe and fix

    The carcass is packed and levelled, the stiles and plinth are cut to the wall and floor, and fixings are made through the back rail onto packers.

  3. 03

    Connect and seal the junctions

    Stops and waste are made off and tested, reveals are set consistently across every front, and the line where cabinetry meets tile is sealed flexibly.

Frequently asked

Because the wall is not straight and the cabinet is. A factory unit arrives with square ends and nothing to cut, so wherever the wall bows or leans, a wedge of daylight appears at one end. The fix is not filler pushed in afterwards. It is an end stile left oversize so the wall profile can be scribed onto it and cut away, letting the cabinet close tight along its full height.

Running it behind costs more tile and gives every future option back. Stopping tile at the cabinet means the next unit has to match the footprint exactly or the wall has to be retiled, which is a decision made now on behalf of someone twenty years away. Where tile continues under the cabinet, the plinth height has to allow for tile thickness before the cabinetry is made.

Usually because the old unit had a door and a shelf and the new one has drawer boxes. A door hides anything; a drawer box has to pass through the space the pipework occupies. Stops sitting at mid-height in the middle of the opening will foul a drawer side, and a waste entering low does the same to the bottom box. Moving them is minor work with the cabinet out.
