Barrier-Free Showers

Taking the curb out is the easy half. A curbless shower with nowhere to turn a chair is not a barrier-free shower.

Barrier-Free Showers

Barrier-free and curbless get used interchangeably and they are not the same claim. A level entry is a necessary condition and nowhere near a sufficient one. A 900 by 900 curbless shower has no step in it and is still unusable from a wheelchair, because there is no room to get in, no room to turn and no room for anyone to assist. How the level entry is built is a floor-structure question dealt with elsewhere; this page is about the geometry that sits on top of it.

Space is the specification. A wheelchair needs somewhere to turn, commonly taken as a circle of about 1,500mm or a T-shaped space achieving the same thing in a smaller footprint, and that space can overlap the shower floor where the shower is large enough to contribute to it. A roll-in shower generally starts around 1,500 by 900mm and becomes genuinely comfortable closer to 1,500 by 1,500. Those figures usually mean the shower is not the only thing changing, because a shower that cannot be reached is not accessible.

Approach decides everything after that. Rolling in on a shower chair and transferring onto a fixed seat are two different builds. A roll-in wants an unobstructed opening, no door, and floor space on either side. A transfer shower can be considerably smaller — around 900 by 900 — but needs its seat in a defined position, the chair parked square alongside, and grab bars arranged for that specific movement. Which applies is decided by the person who will use it, and asking is the design brief.

Controls sit outside the spray, near the entry, roughly 900 to 1,100mm above the floor, so the water can be started and the temperature settled before anybody is wet — nobody reaches through a cold spray from a chair. A handheld on a slide bar with its lower end reachable while seated does most of the actual washing. Where a screen is used at all it is a fixed panel that does not narrow the approach — a hinged door across a roll-in entry cancels out the reason for building one.

Sized for the movement, not the fitting

The shower is dimensioned from the turning circle and the approach the user needs, which is exactly what separates a barrier-free build from a curbless one.

Roll-in or transfer settled first

Whether the chair enters the shower or the person moves onto a seat changes the size, the seat, the bar layout and the opening, so it is the first question asked.

The route counted as part of it

Door width, the approach past the vanity and clear floor space in front of the entry are checked, since the route to a shower is part of its design.

    Roll-in or transfer, assisted or independent, chair dimensions and seated reach are established with the person using it before any layout is drawn.

    Lay out the space and the route

    Turning space, approach, opening width and the bathroom door are set out together on a measured plan, and the rest of the room is adjusted to suit.

    Fix seat, bars and controls to reach

    Seat height and position, grab bar runs and valve and handheld positions are set from the seated user's actual reach, then blocked and roughed in accordingly.

Frequently asked

Only in the sense that it removes one barrier. The step is the most visible obstacle, so taking it out feels like the whole job, but what actually stops a wheelchair user is mostly space — room to turn, room for somebody to assist, and an opening wide enough to get through. A small curbless shower solves none of those. It is an excellent ageing-in-place feature and it is not, on its own, a wheelchair-accessible one.

More than the shower, usually. A turning space of around 1,500mm has to exist somewhere in the room and connect to the shower, the toilet and the basin, so vanity depth, toilet position and the doorway often move with it. The bathroom door is a frequent limit in its own right — a standard 760mm leaf gives noticeably less in clear width once the stops and the open door are counted. The room is better planned as one thing.

Yes, and they generally do. A large, level, well-lit shower with a handheld, a seat and a thermostatic mixer is a good shower by any measure. What reads as clinical is only ever the pieces chosen to be — mostly bar finishes and seat styles, both of which come in domestic-looking versions. Building around one person's needs does not mean surrendering the room to them.
