A freestanding tub is a near half-tonne point load with a tap position that cannot be moved once the floor is down.

Freestanding Bathtubs

Three things about a freestanding tub are decided before it is bought and cannot be changed afterwards: what the floor beneath it will carry, where the tap comes out of that floor, and how much space surrounds it. Material, shape and colour are preferences. These three are not.

Filled, it is heavier than most people picture. A 1,700mm tub holds roughly 200 to 250 litres to the overflow. Add an occupant and the tub itself — around 35kg in acrylic, 130kg or more in cast iron — and the assembly can approach 450kg standing on four feet or a plinth covering a fraction of a square metre. On a slab that is a non-question. On an upper floor with older joists at a long span it is worth checking, and the remedy is usually modest. What is not acceptable is finding out afterwards, since the tub is the last thing into a finished room.

A floor-mounted filler is the detail that catches people out. Its supply rises through the finished floor at one exact coordinate, derived from the tub's final position and the spout's reach, and it is set and braced before the floor is built over it. Move the tub 50mm later and the spout no longer sits over the water. The sequence is tub on site, position marked on the subfloor, standpipe set, then the floor. Where that is not available, a wall-mounted filler at the correct height and projection, or a tub with its own tap ledge, is safer.

Clearance is always underestimated on a plan. A hundred millimetres between tub and wall looks generous drawn and cannot be reached with a hand and a cloth; 150mm is a working minimum and 250 to 300mm is what actually gets cleaned. Then there is the ledge that does not exist. A freestanding tub offers nowhere to put shampoo and nothing to hang a towel on, so a recess in the adjacent wall, a small table, and a hook within reach of somebody lying in the water all have to be decided rather than discovered.

Joist size, span and direction are assessed against the filled weight, so any blocking or sistering happens while the floor is still open and cheap to reach.

Filler position fixed with the tub present

The standpipe coordinate is marked from the tub in its final place rather than from a drawing, because none of it can be adjusted once the floor is finished.

Room left to clean around it

Clearances are set from what a hand and a cloth can genuinely reach, which is a larger figure than the one that looks about right on a plan.

    Check the structure and the position

    Joist direction, size and span under the intended spot are established, and the tub's position is agreed against door swings, clearances and the filler type.

  2. 02

    Set the rough-in before the floor

    Supply and waste are run and the filler standpipe set and braced to the marked coordinate, then the floor build-up and its finish go on around it.

  3. 03

    Place the tub and detail around it

    The tub is set, the filler connected and the floor penetration sealed, and the recess, rail or shelf that stands in for a missing rim is fitted.

Frequently asked

Usually, and it deserves a look rather than an assumption. Unlike a bed or a bookcase, the load lands on four small feet, so it concentrates. What matters is joist size, spacing, span and direction under that specific spot. Where it is marginal the remedy is normally cheap — solid blocking between joists beneath the feet, or sistering one joist — but it has to happen while the floor is still open.

Not without lifting the floor. The supply is set vertically through the structure at a single coordinate suiting one tub in one place, and the finish is laid and sealed around it. Shifting the tub even slightly puts the spout off the water or hard against the rim. This is why the tub is bought and physically positioned before the floor goes down.

Somewhere decided in advance, because the tub itself gives you nothing. Bottles end up on the floor unless a place is made for them, and the common answers are a recess in the adjacent wall at around 600mm up, a small stool or side table, or a narrow shelf near the filler. A hook within reach of somebody already lying in the water is the other one people miss.
